A City is not a Tree and the “patina of life”

Allow me a brief quote from Will Galloway over at Archinect, in response to theperennialwhole‘s post A False Vision in the blog section re: Unwholeness vs wholeness

hah.  ok pseudo intellectual is a bit harsh, but appropriate.  Chris Alexander wrote some fantastic stuff before pattern language.  He eviscerated the metabolists in 1970 (around there anyway) with his brilliant essay “A city is not a tree” that I think everyone should read even now.

The ‘City in a Tree’ line is from ‘A City is not a Tree‘ by Christopher Alexander, wherein Mr. Alexander discusses the importance of structures of sets and other. He also analyzes a number of modern proposals (plans) for new cities, the underlying structure of each he suggests share fundamental similarities to that of a tree.
